Imagine with me if you will...
Christ died. Every. single. year. I am struck by that. Christ, one of the Holy Trinity. died.

Let awe and wonder shake the heavens
and let the earth's foundations quake
For He who dwells in the heavens is laid
within a dark and dismal tomb
And numbered among the dead...
Can you imagine this from the point of view of those long-dead? From the perspective of the demons?
The hymns we sang tonight talked about the chaos that likely ensued when Christ descended into hell and freed the captives. For like two seconds it looked like evil and death had triumphed, but then He-who-created-the-world showed up.
So for me, for those of us here on earth, Christ is dead and in the tomb. But there's so much more going on.

Thank you for reminding us of that spirtual "clutch" point where He made the atonement, fulfilled the law, and now was declaring victory until He shows up again a day later, showing His divinity and humanity. That is, it must have looked pretty dark to those who forgot or did not know all that was going on. It must, as you pointed out, have looked like victory to those who opposed Him and His people.
Psalm 46 is a great picture of the devastation that sin, fallen man, and those devils hath wrought. The most incredible temper tantrum of all - waging war against fellow human beings and killing them. Yet it is God breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two, and... when the shouting is over, at the darkest moment... as His creation teaches us every day that it is darkest just before the dawn... He shows up. That is, He WAITS until dawn to save Israel.
Compare Psalm 46:5b with the four Gospels. "While it was still dark..." in John. "...began to dawn..." in Matthew. "Very early in the morning..." in Mark & Luke.
"God will help her, just at the break of dawn." Psalm 46:5b
